This event will present an opportunity to hear presentations about schemes and experiences relating to supporting career development in academic libraries. The workshop element will provide a chance to help inform the potential implementation of a career development and progression programme within ALN (with a dotted line to the SCONUL mentoring scheme) that may include aspects of the following methods: mentoring; networking; shadowing; buddying; coaching; action learning sets; etc.

Event Outline:

14:00 – Welcome, Housekeeping & Intro – James Stephens (Head of Library Services and University Librarian University of Cumbria and representative of SCONUL Mentoring Oversight Group)

14:05 – Overview of common approaches to supporting career development including differences/similarities between mentoring/networking/shadowing/buddying/coaching – Shell Lemm (Wellbeing and OD Manager UoC)

14:20 – Sharing of experience presentation on the topic of a mutually supportive mentoring relationship from Nel Boswood and Sandie Donnelly.

14:35 – The story so far: how M25 have been developing a version of the SCONUL mentoring scheme for their consortium – Andrew Preater

14:50: Short comfort break before workshop

14:55: Introducing the Mural board workshop activity – Phil Cheeseman (PC)

15:00 – Workshop led by PC: The activity will involve participants sharing experiences and views relating to support for career development and progression and the role that ALN might play. The four questions that the groups will be asked to consider are:

1. What are your past experiences of receiving or providing support relating to career development and progression?

2. How did you benefit from the experience of receiving or providing support?

3. What do we need to be mindful of in our approach?

4. How might ALN facilitate support for career development and progression?
